What a fucking gem! In 2010, a heavyweight LP titled "Portishead - Remixes (Chapter 1)" was released featuring seven songs by other artists, remixed by Portishead. What makes this compilation so special to me is that these hard-to-find tracks are dated, and have that narcotic trip-hop groove that Portishead helped pioneer in the 90's. Though I don't own a copy of this record, I will be searching eBay for a copy. Unfortunately, my life continues for the moment sans turntable. This compilation was only released on vinyl.
The dubby, spaced out beat, and cosmic wah-wah of the guitar bring me to that dark, special place. Add the female back up vocals and the film-noir keyboard samples, and you've got me hooked.

Bo Diddley - Bad Trip
"You ain't got to be on dope to be on a bad trip."
Bo's 1972 release "Where It All Began" has got to be one of my favorite records in my vinyl assortment, so don't be surprised if I feature a track from it again. It's loaded with so much good dirty funk and psychedelic soul. Bo could not only rock out on the guitar like a beast, he's got a voice as strong as steel. Basically, he's a bad-ass motherfucker whom I would have loved to meet while he still actively rocked this earth.
And check out that bad-ass cover featuring the Chicago skyline!

Slave - Feel My Love (InnerWestSoul Remix)

My friend and Chicago house legend Derrick Carter once gave a really good summary of "deep house" saying something to the effect of, "Disco, R&B, funk and soul are all house music. We used to call that music 'deep house,' because it's like reaching back to the music of your roots."
Last month, I did a feature on an amazing rework of ELO's Evil Woman by Sydney-based cratedigger InnerWestSoul. There really isn't much representation for this bloke online beyond his SoundCloud page, so I can't tell you much about him.
What I can say, though is that I think this guy is doing an amazing job at putting his fingerprint on classics, and turning them into dancefloor-ready jams for the 21st century. What I especially like is the fact that a lot of his remixes are concocted using only original bits of the tracks, with no extra additives. I appreciate this purist process, because it leaves so much of what makes the original intact, while somehow strengthening its soul.

The Manhattans - Follow Your Heart
Porsche released their first 911 as a 1965 model. This car instantly became a classic, and is still being built today in over 46 years of nonstop production. I've always had an affinity for these early 911's, for their purist design and complex German engineering.
Some things just become classics like that. They last as a zeitgeist for their era as well as leave a legacy that never goes out of style, and never ages. I feel like this song from the Manhattans, which came out the same year, produced just that effect. In their long history together, this is one of the few songs they recorded with the band's original lineup.

Gonjasufi - Sheep

A little bit of research on Gonjasufi uncovered quite an array of labels he could be identified by - Musician above all, followed by rapper, singer, DJ, and even yoga teacher of half Mexican, half Ethiopian descent. Therefore, it's no wonder that his early 2010 LP debut, A Sufi and a Killer is as sonically diverse as it is, as he is apparently a man of many specifications.
I've wanted to feature him for a while, but it was tough shit deciding which track to post, as all of the music I've heard by him thus far has been equally mind-expanding. Take a look for yourself!

Detroit Sex Machines - Rap It Together
I stumbled upon this groove a few years ago on my weekly raid of Columbia College's music library when I picked up the "Searching for Soul: Rare & Classic Soul Funk" compilation, a great collection of Motown-influenced funk, jazz and soul hits.
Apparently, their first 45 was "unearthed" by the Soul/Funk record exec Phillipe Lehman in a Michigan dealer's collection in late 2000. And thus, the Detroit Sex Machines live on!
