Rapture - How Deep Is Your Love

Approximately 8 years ago this bands quickly became my favorite band; I had just moved out on my own, just entered my twenties and theirs hit single 'House of Jealous Lovers' was the right mix of nostalgia (House Music) and the new disco-punk sound that was exoding from New York.  

A few years after their last album (which didn't get as much praise as it deserved) they're back, still exploring dance genres - this time (it seems) with Disco as their base.  I'm a sucker for a piano rif mixed in with dance beats.  

You should also check out this video, it's pretty badass.  I'm loving the found footage, or made to look like found footage dance bands have been using this year.  It ends with a wonderful clip from Saturday Night Fever, Mr. Travolta showing why he was a sex icon to all those over 40 and under 55.  My mom still swoons over that movie.

Update:  The other video reference i was going to use, the original music video for Hercules and Love Affair's My House has been taken down.  Bummer, it was damn good.

Anyway, i can't wait to put this album in my record collection!

Disclosure - My Inention Is War

I've been in the mood for electronic music, experiencing the slight effects of dance music withdrawal. With a sample from Robin Thicke & Pharrell's "Wanna Love U Girl" this 90's-esque track sounds lke a classic house jam, and is just what the doctor ordered.

The 16- and 19-year-old brotherly duo, Disclosure hails from south London and have just put out a free EP which you can download by liking their Facebook page. It's filled with bouncy beats and walks a strange line between dubstep and house.

Mr. Oizo - "Lambs Anger" Showcase

I first heard "Jo" by Mr. Oizo on the radio while in Berlin. It hooked me, so I did some quick research and realized it came off of a record of his which I didn't have, "Lamb's Anger."

I pondered for a bit which track from this album to feature here on the blog, but eventually realized I couldn't pick just one. Here are a few of my favorites from the record.

It's quite amazing to see how many times Lyn Collin's 1972 hit "Think (About It)" has gone through the sampler by this point. I'm not a big fan of the ubiquity of the hook, but I'm loving the flow and disco-boogie and funky slap bass!

Brassroots - Good Life

Long ago, I picked up a vinyl copy of Inner City's "Big Fun" record at Gramaphone for $4.99. This 1989 dance classic blended the best of Chicago and Detroit house of its time and has become one of my favorite house albums of the era.

Fast forward to 2010, and their most popular jam "Good Life" was covered by London's "Brassroots," an eight-piece horn and percussion ensemble comprised of Israelis, the English, French, Grecians, and Americans. Their Good Life EP is a cover compilation with songs by Radiohead, The White Stripes, and of Course, Inner City.

Caribou - Hannibal

Caribou's album "Swim" was one of my favorite records of 2010. I hadn't listened to it for a while, so I decided to put it on last night. I left the room for a bit and as I re-entered the room, I was welcomed by the horn blasts on this spaced-out track, and wondered to myself why I never paid this specific tune better attention before.

I've been without a computer for about a month, but late last week I finally figured out how to make my smart phone a functioning internet browsing device. I started following artists on sound cloud and found this gem, mixed by DJ Mosca. I think you'll like it.

My friend and Chicago house legend Derrick Carter once gave a really good summary of "deep house" saying something to the effect of, "Disco, R&B, funk and soul are all house music. We used to call that music 'deep house,' because it's like reaching back to the music of your roots."

Last month, I did a feature on an amazing rework of ELO's Evil Woman by Sydney-based cratedigger InnerWestSoul. There really isn't much representation for this bloke online beyond his SoundCloud page, so I can't tell you much about him.

What I can say, though is that I think this guy is doing an amazing job at putting his fingerprint on classics, and turning them into dancefloor-ready jams for the 21st century. What I especially like is the fact that a lot of his remixes are concocted using only original bits of the tracks, with no extra additives. I appreciate this purist process, because it leaves so much of what makes the original intact, while somehow strengthening its soul.

Tensnake - In The End I Want You To Cry

A little deep house to get your body shaking.

I first found out about Tensnake one night while listening to a club radio program on MotorFM here in Berlin when they played this awesome remix of Aloe Blacc's "I Need A Dollar." After some quick research, I came across this Hamburger's prolific Soundcloud page. Wish I could have gotten a chance to go to one of his shows in Germany before my deportation coming up on Saturday. Wah-wah.

Azari & Ill - Into The Night (Prince Language Remix)

Simple house music. Simply good. And it stays true to that early house sound Chicago pioneered back in the dawn of the scene. Toronto-based house outfit Azari & Ill have been pumping out a lot of great work in the past year or so. This gem comes from their "Into The Night" EP, which you can download for free here. The player also has a download function for this individual track.

20 Fingers - Short Dick Man (Feat. Gilette)

Here's my Valentine's contribution. Completely 90's, totally jackin' house, quite Chicago, and rather cheesy.

I had a bromantic singles loser-dinner with my room mate Thomas. And we ate like kings. I prepared a modified version of this baked Diarrhoni and Cheese that Kaelie turned me on to. Ours featured a parmesean / flaxseed crust, fresh broccoli, and ficken (vegan chicken), which comes in this amusing chicken-form-moulded package.
